Nokia always gives surprises to users who sticks to them. Now they are getting ready to launch a new surprise regarding charging. Imagine a day in which we can charge our mobile phone using the sound from a football match, traffic, music or own voices. This could be an amazing feature isn’t it? Dr Joe Briscoe and Dr Steve Dunn of Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is teamed up for this experiment. They have selected nanotechnology which is very smaller than our hair. These materials have a lot of chemical properties. Due to its small size it could easily acquire the energy for movement which results in vibration. For this enough sound source is necessary.

Piezoelectric materials can generate voltage whenever its structure gets squashed or stretched. For this piezoelectric material Zinc Oxide is taken so that it converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. Zinc Oxide is made into Nano rods or Nano wires so it can be easily placed in any surfaces. This experiment get an output voltage of five volts which is enough to charge a Nokia Lumia 925.

The day in which we could forget about the power socket for charging mobile phone is not far away and think about a mobile phone which will fulfill all your dreams . . . !

Creating playlist in Windows phone

Listening music with our favorite playlist is a wonderful experience. In Windows Phone it is not very easy to create a custom playlist. So today I will tell some steps to create it.

Steps to create Playlist:

• Go to Start -> Music + Videos -> Music

• Play a song to be added in playlist

• Go back to Music + Videos and open History. Tap the song which you have played

• Hold on the song then, select “Add to now playing”. Use select option to add multiple songs into playlist

• After completing it press volume key (up or down). Tap to Song/Artist name

• To save playlist press on Select button

• Give a new name to your playlist

• Press Enter to complete

Windows Phone 8.1 update

Official announcement from Nokia confirms that Lumia Windows Phone 8 smartphone will receive the Lumia Cyan software, the new Windows Phone 8.1 update and Lumia features from this week on wards. Users will get an automatic notification when the update is rolled out. It can be also checked using the Nokia’s website.

The update will be available exclusive only to Nokia Lumia users. The new Lumia Cyan has many new features like,

• Customize start screen background image

• Home screen with a new third column and customized live tiles

• Action center includes new features to access app notification in locked condition

• Wi-Fi sense automatically connects to free Wi-Fi hotspots

• Word flow keyboard enables gliding your finger through keys

Steps to update Nokia Lumia Windows phone 8:

 1. Make sure that you have 1.5GB free memory space. To check it go to Settings -> Storage check (storage sense)

 2. Your Nokia Lumia will automatically checks and gives you notification. Otherwise check the following link. Otherwise check the Nokia website or tap Settings -> Phone update or tap notification message to install the updates. It can be done immediately or postpone.

 3. Main update require 2 hours and other will take 10-30 minutes. It depends upon your phone model and you can’t use your phone during the time of updating.

Note: Use Wi-Fi network to download the update. Make sure that your phone has 50% before update get started and connect a charger. Don’t get worry by seeing your phone get restarted many times.

Tips to increase Battery life

    Today Smartphones has become one of the essential part of our life. We couldn’t imagine a day without this because we use it daily mainly to access different apps, saving our personnel stuffs and many more. But we are not bothered about the battery usage. I will tell some methods to save our phone’s battery life so that it can be used for longer period than before.

 1. Battery Saver

By using Battery Saver method battery life of your Windows phone will last longer. After using any app in your Windows phone try to close it from the option otherwise, it will get worked in background consuming battery charge. We can close all nonessential features which gets worked in background by using Battery Saver option.

• Tap App list -> Settings -> Battery Saver -> Turn ON (for Windows 8.1 phone)

• Settings -> Battery Saver -> Turn ON (for Windows 8 phone)

Note: To view nonessential features tap to usage

After Battery Saver is turned ON then,

• All background apps will not get functioned until you open it.

• Automatic retrieve of emails and calendar get stopped. If you have to update it then do it manually.

• Live tile which receive push updates will not be updated.

We choose three different options when Battery Saver get activated. The heart icon inside battery level indicator is displayed  when Battery Saver is running. Tap on Advanced option given below Battery Saver. Choose whether Battery Saver is activated when battery is below 20%, only stays active until the phone is next charged, active all the time.

 2. Screen Brightness

When Screen Brightness is set to High then your phone consume much battery power. Sometimes Auto adjust brightness is ON. Then turn it OFF and select Low brightness option.

• App list -> Settings -> Brightness

Changing your white background to black color will also saves battery power.

 3. Turn off wireless connections

Turn off wireless connections such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC after using it. We all leave Bluetooth of our device in ON condition after using it. This consume a lot of power so don’t forget to turn it OFF. Use wired headsets other 

than Bluetooth headsets.

 4. Charging method

When charging your new Windows phone for the first time after purchase charge it completely. Sometimes it shows the battery completed message suddenly. Then turn it OFF and once again charge it. Now it indicates the correct battery level so charge up to 100% before using it.

Charge your battery only when it reaches below 10 %. Try to charge it until it shows battery full. Turn OFF charger immediately after charging is completed.

 5. Turn OFF GPS

Turn OFF GPS when it is not get used. Otherwise it will drain your battery in a fast manner. Turn it ON when you are using any location based apps in your Windows phone.

 6. Lock screen time

Always set a very low time to lock the screen. So your phone gets locked faster.

App list -> Settings -> Lock screen then, set the time to at least 30 seconds.

 7. Increase Email Sync time

If you have enabled any Email account to get synchronized but you are using it frequently. Then turn Sync time to 30 minutes, 2 hours or set it to manually.

• App list -> Settings -> Email + Accounts open your account change the option under Download new content.

 8. Turn OFF Xbox

If you don’t like to upload your Game scores, Achievement then turn it off.

• App list -> Settings -> Applications-> Games -> turn off Connect with Xbox

The music can also be turned OFF if you don’t use Xbox Music.

• App list -> Settings -> Applications -> Music + Videos -> turn off connect with Xbox Music.

 9. Regular updates

New updates of your phone will fix certain Bugs. So make it sure that you are using the current software itself.

• App list -> Settings -> Phone updates and for app update

• App list -> Store -> Updates

 10. Turn ON Air plane mode

This will turn OFF all wireless connections like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and Cellular data.

Remove duplicate songs from Windows phone

Most of the people will notice many duplicate songs in the music library of your Windows phone. This makes you frustrating by seeing the same song for many times. Everybody tries to delete that file but after some time it will again get appeared in same location itself or when we try to delete it from its folder shows only one file. I've find out two methods to solve this problem.

1. Turning off Xbox Music:

Go to start -> Music + Videos -> More -> Settings and Turn off Xbox Music collection

2. Formatting SD card:

• Connect your phone to a computer using a data cable

• Open your SD card using Windows explorer. Click on View tab and then select hidden items

• Open the new files visible to you delete it if that is not necessary

• After that move all your stuffs including Music from your SD card that computer

• Then Format the SD card after that remove it from Windows phone

• Reset your phone by tapping to Settings -> About -> Reset

• Insert your SD card once again and move the stuffs which you are saved in computer

• Create a folder named Music on SD card and then move all music files into it

Note: Before formatting backup all your settings by Apps -> Settings -> Backup -> App list + Settings.

Now the duplicate music songs problem will be solved.

Twitter app for Windows phone get new update

The Twitter has finally got its update. This is the first update for the app since November 2013. You may think it would be a nightmare because it has taken a long break of about seven months, but it is true. The supports both Windows 8.1 phone and Windows 8 phone. It will surely give new hope to Windows phone lovers that in future Twitter will come up with new features.

The official update of version 3.2 allows users to upload multiple photos in a single tweet itself. It has also a feature to tag friends in uploaded photos. Enables to share photos through direct messages itself. The home timeline will now show a preview of tweets containing pictures.

New features added is the ability to reply, favorite and retweet from your timeline itself. It has also some performance improvements. The app is same as that in other devices like Android, iOS.

    Microsoft has now delivered new updates to its Facebook Beta app version 5.2. This will be available to both Windows 8 phone and Windows 8.1 phone users. The update includes bug fixing and performance improvements. The new app from the current social media giant will be more integrated with Windows 8.1 phones.

Now the app will be working in a good manner than before. Main attraction of Facebook Beta is that we can see photos along with comments. News feed, Message, Notification, etc. will be carried out in a much fast manner.

You could now upload videos directly along with your status. But in earlier app only photos can be uploaded. This helps to improve your status in a better way so that it could be noticed by all your friends. The update also includes a new look. It can be set as your lock screen tile.

Black screen during calling

Most of our Windows phones will be changed to black when we try to call. It will not get responded for sometimes seems to be our phone is out of service. So that we cannot cancel the call. This is mainly affected to the Lumia phones. Nothing to worry it can be solved easily.

What to do:

Double tapping on the power button will gives your old screen for a while. Make sure to cancel the call quickly at that time.

Solutions:

• This is mainly because of the obstacles happened to the phones proximity sensor. It is located near to the front camera.

• If you are using a screen guard (protector) make sure that it is original and suits your phone and also it is not covering proximity sensor. Clean dust particles in front of the sensor.

• Give a slight pressure over the sensor part.

• If again same problem is occurred then, replace your sensor unit.

Install App in SD card for Windows phone

SD card

Most of us install the apps in our phone memory of Windows phone itself. It will result in reduction of our phone memory in a high manner. Before installing apps shows only a very low size for its setup file. We believe that it will take only that much amount of space from your memory. Really the app will consume double the size of its setup file after installation. This could be avoided by installing apps in your SD card of your Windows phone (if your phone supports SD card).

By installing the app in your SD card will not take any space from your phone memory. So phone memory can be used for storing some other personal stuffs. Actually phone memory will be less when compared with most of the SD card memory. So always try to install apps in your SD card and save your precious phone memory. Lack of memory space in phone will affect speed of your phone.

I will tell about the method through which we can install app in your SD card memory. First of all you have to download .XAP file of the app which you want to install. This can be done also by using a PC.

Downloading .XAP files:

• Go to www.windowsphone.com using any web browser.

• Click on Apps + Games tab given at the top. Select App you want to install.

• Scroll down and click on Download and install manually which is given below app requirements and supported languages.

• Give the location to which .XAP is to be downloaded.

• Then move .XAP file to your Windows phone.

Install App to SD card:

• Open Store from your App list.

• Select More (dotted icon given below) option then tap Install local apps and wait for some time.

• From the list select App after that tap Install.

• When installation is completed shows your app in the App list.

Control PC using Smartphone

        In the last year itself Microsoft has given app for Android, iOS users to control desktop PCs using there smartphones. At that time Windows phone users were eagerly waiting for it. But now Microsoft has now launched a new app for them named ‘Microsoft Remote Desktop’. This app is now available for free from the Windows Phone Store.

Basic requirements:

• Windows Phone – Windows 8.1

• Android – Android 2.2 or later

• iOS – iOS 6.0 or later

• Mac – OS X 10.6.0 or later

Once you download and install Remote Desktop in your Windows Phone 8.1 then, Windows store will recognize you as the owner of this app. This allows you to install the same app in another device. So that this can be called as a Universal app.

Remote Desktop has many user interface features, such as the ability to pin desktop connections to Windows Phone 8.1’s start screen, Use the predictive text capability of the operating system to specify a remote connection. It also has an option to disable thumbnails on the Windows Phone 8.1 screen and could show the background image through the application tiles.

The Remote Desktop live tile features transparency support which allows users to change home screen backgrounds. The app uses RDP 8.1 and RemoteFX to provide high audio fidelity and graphics.

The app can be connected with the Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista OS. To access the PC you have to first know about the PC name, your username and password. When you are connecting it with Windows 8.1 or Windows 8 OS, then the system defaults to touch mode allowing you to touch, swipe and to use gestures. But if you are connecting to a Windows 7 OS, default mode will interrupt your finger as mouse input. The connection will get disconnect quicker when sessions are terminated.

Connect with Windows 8.1 Phone

By default, Windows PC’s have Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) disabled. So you have to enable it first. For that,

• Right click Computer of the PC then select Properties.

• Click on Remote settings tab given at the top left corner (for Windows 8.1 PC)

• Click on Change settings then select Remote tab (for Windows 8 PC)

• Click the box to Allow remote connection to this computer.

• Windows 8.1 OS is also recommend to click the box to allow connection from computers with Network level Authentication for an additional level of security. Accepting remote desktop connection feature will not be included in Home version of Windows 8, Windows 8 and Windows Vista.

1. First install the setup on your Windows 8.1 Phone. Then you can find out it from the app or from the start screen (if it is pinned).
2. After the app get loads click on the plus (+) symbol which will be showed below the current screen. In order to connect a new PC.
3. Enter the Host name or IP address of PC which you are connecting to. Then select save if you would like to connect again in future. Then the connection checks for a valid, trusted certificate. After that select don’t ask again option.
4. When the connection is made then your phone will be changed to landscape view allows you to see the desktop of PC.
5. Navigate with your finger with the on-screen mouse cursor. Single and double click can be done by single tap and double tap on your Windows 8.1 phone.
6. Tap on the keyboard icon on the header bar to access on-screen keyboard. This allows you to use keys such as Alt, Ctrl, Esc and others.
7. To disconnect tap twice on your Windows 8.1 phone’s back key.

The Remote Desktop app for Windows phone 8.1 has avoided some important features such as Remote Desktop Gateway, RD Connection Broker and pinch and zoom option. Hope it will come up with the next update but the app will be currently suitable for persons other than IT pros.

Free up memory for Windows phone

    Some of the Windows 8 phone users will be facing a problem that a large amount of space will be used by a non-specific category “other” in the Storage sense of your phone. So that the users can’t install many app or update because of low space. It will always show a low storage message.

      But in Windows 8.1 non-specific category “other” will be changed to many number of named storage categories. So the users may not affect any type of low storage issues.

      Go to settings -> phone -> storage -> storage sense to see the “other” non-specific category. This includes all the files which doesn’t belong to known categories like the temporary files of your social network news feeds. Follow the various methods or apps to free up your phone memory.

1. Free up phone memory in Windows 8 (Lumia)

Remove unwanted stuff

• Use Storage Check application to remove the unwanted applications or stuffs from your phone. For that go to settings -> storage check, swipe left to see amount of storage used by Apps, Temporary files and Downloaded Maps.

• Select apps then click uninstall option from the details of each unwanted apps. So that it will get removed an increases your phone memory.

• Click on Temporary files then select option clear the files to remove all files.

• By selecting maps will show all the maps which you are downloaded. Long press on each map will give an option remove it or delete all maps.

Clear browsing history

• Go to settings -> applications -> Internet Explorer -> delete history. This will delete browsing history, cookies, saved passwords and temporary files.

• Go to settings -> applications -> search -> delete history. This will delete all Bing search histories like Bing music, Bing Vision.

• Go to settings -> applications -> Maps -> delete history. This will delete all map searches.

• If you would like to remove any of your old Office documents then, press start to select Office-> locations (places) -> phone. Long press on individual documents then select delete.

• To remove offline mixes from MixRadio, press start to select NokiaRadio -> Offline mixes. Long press on any mix to remove it.

If you’re having a computer then, connect your phone with a compatible USB cable. So that you can view all your stuffs. Right click on it then select cut option if you want to move this to your PC. Go to a location right click to select paste option.

2. Using apps for Windows 8/8.1

By using application it will remove the storage space occupied by a non-specific category “other” and all temporary files in your phone memory. There are various apps which can be used for this purpose such as

• Storage Cleaner

• Shrink Storage

I prefer Storage Cleaner is because Shrink Storage will sometimes get crashed. More over using this try to remove your files manually (Step 1).

3. Reset your Windows phone (Low space for new update)

• Before resetting your Windows phone make sure that you’re having the Backup.

• During resetting process don’t sign in with your Microsoft account.

• Update your phone when process gets completed.

• After update is completed, if you want to restore a backup then reset your phone again.

• During the second time reset sign in with your Windows account and restore it.
